Tiger subsequently redesigned the prototype i-Cybie to make it look more like a dog and less like the AIBO ERS-110. The electronic pet was first released in January 2001.". The Silverlit prototype is "naked" with all the wiring and PC boards exposed, but without any outer plastic shell components.

@Michael [Mike’s Tech Shack] sorry to dm, i just wanted to ask, what is your plan going forward with the proto? looks like alot of repairs need to happen, and thats just mechanically. it is sad to see the neck even broken. according to the listing it should at least power on the eyes, do you plan to try getting it to move at all?
3:09 PM
also thank so you much for the documentation here. looks like a cool little guy!! your commentary of the robot is very thorough and you did a very good job recording and showing the spots you were talking about (ive seen a fair share of youtube videos that just fail at this...)
3:16 PM
oops i didnt mean "dm" i meant ping. thank you once again for the documentation and going out of your way to purchase the proto. i also wanted to ask if einfari was able to get a look at it

I cybies are definitely worth to have! In the US, they're mostly sold on ebay and shopgoodwill (and other online stores as well) Just know that I cybies are not as advanced as something like an aibo since their original firmware is quite limited when it comes to autonomy. Most features of i cybie come from the remote. They are capable of being programmed though if you have the cartridges and a downloader (or someone you know who has a downloader)/arduino cartridge programmer. They can do some real cool stuff if you do program them (e.g. Z-Cybie software, gives more autonomy for i cybies) (edited)

So far the only axis i know for sure is faulty is the gearbox that moves the neck up and down. I can see that it appears to have a cracked gear which makes the entire axis go limp(basically it slips)
12:58 PM
The goal right now is to see if he even powers up, once i do that ill look at restoring him to his former glory
12:58 PM
I have high hopes as when I first got him i connected the battery and for a split second his eyes lit up red and the speaker made some sound, but i think that was the very last of the battery’s energy lol

12:23 PM
I did at one point get it to boot. A little led on its forehead lit up green. I pressed the head button and he made like a cartoon clingclang noise and his eyes cycled thru all the colors before shutting off abruptly (edited)
12:23 PM
Head also did move at one point under its own power randomly
12:23 PM
Or mouth rather
12:24 PM
Seems like the battery connection isn’t very good and it doesn’t help that the battery dropped from full capacity to like 6v in a matter of minutes. Again thankfully it’s a nicad so it’ll more than likely be able to be resurrected (edited)

It has little endstops similar to something like a roboquad or robosapien.

Like
10:54 PM
On all the limbs
10:54 PM
And be cause of that good god does he move smooth
10:55 PM
Explains the proto cybie promos
10:55 PM
The motor moves at a constant speed until it reaches a limit
10:55 PM
As opposed to a retail cybies “move and check” potentiometer behavior
10:55 PM
A limitation I’m guessing is due to whatever processor they used
Avatar
Really cool. I remember Andy Filo talking about how the original silverlit prototype models had a more simple gear box and used no pots at all while redesigning them, from an old cybie article. (edited)
7:46 PM
that probably explains why not all the motors move to the exact spots or angles all the time for the early prototypes
7:49 PM
the calibration process is quite weird since he just lays flat while doing it instead of going on his sides like the retail ones, but could be due to the limitations in the limbs or something, very interesting (edited)
7:53 PM
I love how he just greets you by making Lil barking sounds and sits down with green eyes. I think its a lot more lively than the retails boot process when it just quickly calibrates head and leg motors, and goes straight to whatever mood it was on previously (edited)

Michael [Mike’s Tech Shack] 11/15/2024 10:54 AM
It’s because it doesn’t use pots! Essentially what it’s doing is moving every limb to its limit switch
10:54 AM
On my retail cybie it will move the limbs slowly and smoothly till their limits and then do a stall test (the buzzing you hear after the limb finishes moving)
10:55 AM
These simply move to their limit and back
10:55 AM
However one of the switches or wiring for the switch appears to be faulty but that shouldn’t be to hard to fix as it’s literally just like (edited)

you'd think a prototype would have some easy way to take apart since they probably happens very often, but they literally just soldered everything instead of making connectors LOL

and GLUE???

I'm so glad the retail cybies have a much better design with connectors and easier to take apart. thank you Mr. Filo and the ole redesigning crew from tiger (edited)

11:44 AM
Anyone have any pics of how everything is wired up internally? Keep in mind this pack is smaller and a lower voltage than the production dogs

I think it’s probably gonna involve me opening the proto pack. It’s on its last legs anyway. I just wanna make sure I give everything the proper voltages
1:51 PM
I might measure the voltage from the yellow wire at a full charge but I have no clue how accurate that would be. Didnt rly consider that LOL
1:51 PM
The sag on this pack is horrendous as soon as u disconnect load or a charger the voltage starts tanking. Done everything in my power to resurrect it and it’s definitely working better than when I initially got it but not by much

Anyone have any idea how an I cybie battery pack is wired, the nicad that my prototype came with just kicked the bucket lol, gonna attempt to make a new one for it using NiMH cells but I know that there’s a 3rd wire in cybie packs for some reason
I have so many dead cybie batteries that you can just have one to futz with

It should be easier than lithium. I have done it poorly years ago

Oh God. I am scared to know what that would look like. But it was actually so bad because I never had used a soldering iron before and used this shitty $20 kit that my coworker at the time found lying around. It was so fucking stupid (edited)

I almost started one of the batteries on fire trying to solder it too. I am embarrassed even typing this.

Hey guys small heads up, in the coming weeks im going to attempt to finally repair my prototype i cybie, would appreciate any help i could get from the community as i go along
9:24 AM
I plan to start with the leg assemblies as they appear to be mostly ok aside from one screaming gear (i hope to god its not the motor)
9:25 AM
From there ill move on to the head assembly, which will probably be the hardest task as from what i understand its pretty difficult to get access to (especially considering this dog has zero connectors and everything is hand soldered)
9:25 AM
If that all goes according to plan ill then dump the eeprom and make its data publicly available, and last but not least! Ill recell the original battery pack
9:26 AM
While I’ll be doing most of the handiwork here i would appreciate any help from the many experts in this server. Stay tuned!
9:26 AM
also, apologies once again for the wait haha, school has been incredibly busy but im beginning to wrap it all up so, expect more

Managed to safely remove the sticker from the CPU to get a better look at the part number. Then went ahead and put it back on for preservation purposes. This might help us make sense of the eeprom data i end up dumping

Update! Gearboxes have been cleaned and regreased, and the only split gear in the dog has been replaced! Task for tomorrow is to resolder the wires I cut having to pull the head assembly out
9:36 PM
After that, hopefully. We will be on the home stretch
9:37 PM
you were able to find a gear for the split one?

Michael [Mike’s Tech Shack] 2/6/2025 9:47 PM
I actually happened to have one laying around
9:47 PM
Just needed its inner diameter bored out haha
9:48 PM
Funny think, the inside of the gearbox on this guy uses brass gears. So they cheaped out at launch for some reason
9:48 PM
In the hip gearboxes
9:48 PM
Also I found second hand replacement packs on Amazon, gonna try ordering one to see if it works.
9:48 PM
Package Content: 2 x battery 1 x USB charging cable Notice 1.Choose the EXACTLY same voltage battery which your equitment needed 2.Make sure to plug in the correct +/- pole and use the correct plug 3.Disconnect the battery and the equitment if not use for a long time 4.Keep out from fire
9:51 PM
Will need the connector changed but since I have them already that should be a piece of cake to switch over
9:55 PM
Fyi does anyone have a spare cybie leg they’d be willing to sell me? Need it for the clutch haha

So Cybo is just gonna be permanently double jointed
5:54 PM
(The end stops on the output shafts of one side of his body both broke off so he can just spin his legs till he runs out of wire. Incredible)
5:58 PM
Oh shit! It looks like the clutches actually use a little snapring to hold them together so it might actually be serviceable
5:58 PM
Here’s hoping it s a drop in replacement

Michael [Mike’s Tech Shack] 2/18/2025 6:26 PM

6:34 PM
EUGH
6:36 PM
Dang that looks really similar
6:36 PM
I’m very hopeful now
6:36 PM
Only difference I see is they used a pancake motor instead of a standard one to move the neck
6:36 PM
Also the neck doesn’t move as far but knowing Cybo that might be because something is broken in his neck. Lol
6:37 PM
Damn the whole gearbox is held in with one screw
6:37 PM
Neat
6:39 PM
Ugh. It’s close but it doesn’t function the same way
6:39 PM
Darn
6:39 PM
The hunt continues

Avatar
Michael [Mike’s Tech Shack] 3/6/2025 10:18 AM
They’ll more than likely make some sort of announcement! Also! Fun fact for anyone wondering. Other than the length of the shaft (which is why i suspect they changed the shoulder cladding design to be convex rather than concave) production model cybie shoulder clutches fit, however i wasnt able to get the clip in there. It’s really close and i think its propably doable tho, so in case the other owner wants to give it a shot, ill include the rest of the spare legs from the donor cybie
7:22 PM
Modern mod super cybie showed up today. It seems to only have the rx, TX, and ground connected because wiring to the 3.3 v part of the main board makes the dog do weird shit when plugged in like turn its lights on and move randomly.
